Lots of trolls in here
Before you start to make a 3d model out of a concept art you should have made some different versions so you can chose the best one. Here are 5 versions of the troll that Nixi made before we chose to go with troll number 5 (bottom right). We might include some of the other versions later in the game, but that’s mostly up to if we get the time to do it : )
Concept of normal enemy
Today I’d like to share a new recording. Like the previous one I posted, this video demonstrates the process of drawing and coloring an enemy concept in photoshop. All I knew when starting was that it should be a quite heavily armored average male warrior controlled by Maag, the leader of Jedna. His equipment will vary but in this case I felt that it would be cool if he wielded a large shield, making him suitable for a little more dynamic and interesting AI. I didn’t use any reference whatsoever, I’m painting directly from my head and experimenting with different shapes to create an interesting armor.
It took about three hours to finish but the video is at high speed as usual.

What tools do we use to create Penalty of Heroes
Here’s a list of all the main programs that we use to make Penalty of Heroes.
The game engine, level editor and other stuff (scripting & collision system, shaders and so on) is done in-house and our programmers write everything in C# (The engine and the level editor both use XNA 3.0 and are developed in Visual Studio 2008).
Our concept artists use Wacom drawing boards to draw the characters in the computer in Photoshop.
Our 3d artists use 3d Studio Max for modeling and Mudbox 2009 for texturing
Here’s from an on-line meeting using Marratech
Additional programs:
For the web we code in HTML and Flash and for the blog we use Word Press (HTML).
For communication we use MSN, Skype, Marratech and related programs.
For documentation/project management we use Word, Excel and Google document.
For video & trailers we use Premier Pro & After Effects
Also our narrative guy mr Stoffer uses MS Paint to draw his ideas.
Hmm I think that’s about it : )
The evolvement of a character
Here’s the evolvement of one of our main characters in the game. This shows how our artists, Nixi and Dwarf work:
- First they discuss what kind of character they should try to make, if the character should be a hero, enemy, skinny, muscular, male and female and so on.
- Then they start to make rough hand drawn sketches. Then they do some more sketching to make the character they way they want.
- After the characters layout is what they had in mind, they take their Wacom drawing boards and draw the character into Photoshop.
- When they have made a satisfying drawing of the character they hand over it to the 3d artists Jona and Tekei and they make a 3d model from it in 3d Studio Max.
There you have it!
