Swedish summer

Summer in Sweden

It sounds really good, but the fact is that during June it’s mostly shitty weather. Normal is that in April and May we have really great weather with about 15-25+ degrees (Celsius) and then when summer should start in June we have a month of kind of bad weather with rain and about 15-20+ degrees.

So why do I write this? Well, it’s because it’s been typical “Swedish summer weather” now for about 2 weeks now and it’s so boring : ( Well I guess the summer will start here late in June so in a couple of weeks it will be all nice I think : )

Later today/tonight we’ll have the first big meeting since GGA and will discuss all the feedback we got. Everyone has written down all the feedback they got/heard from the people playing PoH. At the meeting we’ll decide what things we’ll have to redo and tweek.

Vacation is nice

Since GGA we have had a bit of a vacation from PoH. Tomorrow we’ll have a big meeting about all the feedback we got from all the people at GGA. We will compare notes and then decide what things we should change or redo.

It was really good that we got a nice playable version of PoH (with most of the features in) to GGA. This so people could give us feedback on the gameplay and what things worked and what didn’t. The good thing is that we can make most of the changes now, if we got that feedback later (2-3 month) we probably wouldn’t/couldn’t make the changes. I think about 250-300 people tried PoH at GGA and I think most of us have the same idea what worked and what didn’t.

Nordic Game - Day two (pt4)

People playing Penalty of HeroesAfter parties, seminars and hundreds of people tried our game, it’s all over. We got new friends, new knowledge and tons of feedback, so were getting back ready to take all feedback and implement new things.

I was at four different seminars today:
Alex Evans from Media Molecule (Little Big Planet)
Really great seminar and he had a new way to do a presentation.

Financial Panel with Fred Hansson, Siggi Keogle (Attraction), Nick Parker (Parker Consulting Ldt), Valerie Bourgoin (CNC)
Good seminar, where different people gave different advice how to finance a game project.

Suda 51, Grasshopper (No More Heroes)
I had really big exportations for this one (since I really enjoyed NMH), but I think that it was one of least interesting seminars that I went to.

Ian Bowden, Rockstar Leeds (GTA Chinatown wars, GTA Liberty City Stories)
Great seminar, seams to be a really nice guy. Though he talked more about ESC (Eurovidion song contest) then other stuff :p (he thought Turkey had the best song this year)

Screenshots & new webpage for Penalty of Heroes

Yes, that’s right, we have put up a new web page on the official “Penalty of Heroes” web page at www.penaltyofheroes.com : ) It’s not the final one and it’s better than the last one. Also there are some content such as concept art, teaser trailer and SCREENSHOTS! This is our first officially released screenshots of Penalty of Heroes, so we hope you like them : )

PoH page

The screenshots are work in progress and will be adding more features before the release this fall. So the final game will look better than the screenshots that we just released, though we hope you digg them : ) We’re grateful for feedback on them, if we don’t’ get any feedback (good or bad) we don’t know what we should focus on : )

Back from Prague

After a couple of days in Prague, I’m back at the office in Sweden. The writing is put on ice this week as I’m currently working on feedback from the story and the level’s built. This week I will work with our sound effects guy (Josef) and I’m eager to see what sound he will put on the characters’ animations.

I’m also working on the upcoming trailer. Nothing is really determined for the moment, but as usual it’s going to kick ass. I have tons of ideas and the hard part will be to decide which one will fit our game the most. The obvious choice of curse would be something like THIS

But that wouldn’t really fit our game now would it!?

Time for another game presentation (part 5.1)

Yesterday we had the presentation about the marketing of PoH that we were supposed to have like 3 weeks ago, but then it was canceled due to the fact that some people got sick. Overall the presentation went really well and it lasted for about 20 minutes and then we talked and discussed for about one hour. We got a advice to start to use Twitter so we probably start to twitter in a few weeks.

This was the last “game presentation” we have before the final one at GGA in the beginning of June. Though we have a game play panel presentation in a few week, but that presentation is just us getting feedback from the “game panel” playing the game, so no real presentation is needed.

Presentation done

Our presentation went ok and it took about 25 minutes. Then we had about 60-70 minutes to discuss and get feedback from the “game panel”. We got really good point and suggestions what we should try to do differently and focus more on.

After the presentation we sat down in the PoH team and discussed everything that had been suggested on the presentation. We came up with really good stuff and took some major decisions reading the way the narrative is told, the animation system, the characters in the game and the rpg elements. Some of the things that was pointed out by the game panel, we discussed and decided to stick with.

We work as “couples” :p

Databox Games at work

Left to right: Jona, Jakob, Tekei, Dwarf, Nixi

Yepp, we work mostly in pairs. This mainly because of two things:
You can get good feedback right away and if someone should be sick or can’t do his job, the other person can jump right in and continue where he left off. When programmers do this it’s called “extreme programming”, so it’s kind of like this we work: Håkan/Jens (me), Dwarf/Niki, Baba/Jakob, Jona/Tekie. So no lead just couples :p
